Home security ideas
01/01/2014 Back To BlogIn a safe neighborhood, not too many home owners are concerned about the security of their home. Some of them take extra precautions to install security upgrades while the rest just let it be as they feel there are no valuables at home. In most cases homeowners do not call for a residential locksmith unless there is a burglary. Here are a few tips that you could use to avoid such incidents as preventative action is the key.
Residential locksmith
- Ensure that all spare keys are kept safely in a locking box on the door or garage. This should be opened only after keying in a secret numerical code. Looking for lost house keys is a cumbersome task and a real waste of time.
- The exterior of the home should have ample lighting and remove all clutter from the yard. All bushes need to be trimmed as they are potential hiding spots for burglars.
- It’s a good idea to key all doors in a similar way except for one door that is likely to be used by the utility staff like cleaners or delivery boys. In case of a house lockout, the locksmith will just have to rekey one door and not all of them.
- Doors and windows need to be secured well as they are possible weak points and burglars target these areas first. Fasten long screws on the door jamb as this is effective against a kick in. Check the lock mechanism of windows periodically and it should also fit well into the frame. Insert wooden dowels inside the window track as this is a helpful security measure for single or double hung windows.
Locksmith Ontario also recommends a security evaluation as burglary is fairly common in some neighborhoods and it’s better to stay on your guard.
